DWF is the signature project of the Darling Independat Power Producer (Darling IPP), which was founded in 1996 to address South Africa's considerable potential for producing renewable wind energy. It also forms part of a broader initiative, the Darling Sustainable Energy and Employment Scheme (Darling SEES), which was established to support the broader jobcreation potential of a renewable energy sector in the country. After many delays and some hurdles concerning the environmental impact assessment - as well as some public concerns about aesthetics and birdlife - we finally got the green light in 2006, and held our official sod-turning ceremony in February 2007.

Beyond actually generating electricity, our goals are quite broad. Firstly, we want to transfer the technology into the local market and demonstrate how effective it can be. We also want to showcase how such initiatives can be funded in a developing economy context and how their electricity can be integrated into local grid. In due course, we hope that a successful project will influence legislation to support growth in the use of renewable energy alternatives.
